She relocated to California in 1910 for health reasons. Charlotta took over the California eagle upon the death of the papers founder, John James Neimore, in 1912 and served as it's publisher until 1952. Charlotta's full name was Charlotta Amanda Spears Bass. She was a journalist, and activist, and she championed African American freedom and equality in the California eagle. She died on April 12, 1969.
Charlotta bass took over the California eagle because she believed it was her responsibility to take it over after Neimores death in 1912. "The Eagles publisher, J.J. Neimore, took ill and asked Bass to take over the operation of the paper upon his death" bass then took over the newspaper and changed the name from the California Owl to the California Eagle.
