The commanding officer of the sea vessel, Captain Jaggery, does not take kindly to the path Charlotte has chosen. “‘Miss Doyle,’ he said between gritted teeth, ‘you will go to your cabin, remove these obscene garments and put on your proper dress. You are causing a disruption. I will not allow it’” (120). Unshaken by her superior’s outrage, Charlotte stands by her newly-found position among her company. “‘I’m no longer a passenger. I’m with them.’ So saying, I stepped back until I sensed the men around me’” (121). Showing her decision as one unchanging, Charlotte chooses to work alongside the crew and to bear any punishment dealt her way. With such a strong sense of resolve, Charlotte will continue to withstand even the toughest challenges.
Following the beating of her friend, Charlotte’s character transforms from a proper young woman to a fellow associate of the crew. Throughout numerous ordeals, Charlotte learns the importance of perseverance and the value that comes with finding her true self.
