Charlotte Moon unconsciously acquired a name through her earnest endeavors to inform those in the United States of the drastic needs evident in China. Lottie deserted her life of ease to minister to the poverty-stricken people of China. Although she exhibited care and commitment after she found Christ, Lottie formerly rebelled against God and especially mission-work. “If there was a single way to waste a life, Lottie told herself, being a missionary was it.” Lottie’s resistance eventually changed and God used her to begin a catapult of great missionary endeavors in China.
Charlotte Diggs Moon, known as Lottie, grew up in a wealthy family of plantation owners. Her parents Edward and Anna Marie Moon raised her and her siblings in the Southern Baptist Church and strictly attended church every week. One of Lottie’s favorite pastimes on Sunday included listening to her parents read about missionaries. Lottie’s dad traveled a lot for the planation. However, after her grandmother, Sarah Coleman Turner Barclay Harris, died on May 5, 1847, he began spending more time overseeing the plantation from home. Before she sailed to China, Lottie used her time to visit with her family and exhort others to give the life in service for Christ. On September 1 in 1873, she sadly bid adieu to her family members with the realization she might never see her family again. Lottie arrived in China on October 7, 1873 amid a blur of new culture and sights. She soon discovered the honor and toil of telling people of her Lord and Savior, Jesus
