Public education has been a dominant industry in the United States for quite some time. Public education is considered to be a right within the U.S. for over a hundred years. In the 1700's, most schooling was done within one classroom. in 1821, Boston erected the first public high school. By 1870, every state had free elementary public schooling. Because of this, the United States boasted one of the higher literacy rates in the world. Eventually states required children to attend school (Singer, 'Teachers' heading). As time progressed, the standards for public education increased. Following World War ll, teachers were required to have a four-year college degree. The furthering of
