A company can consist of various management and leadership styles. This is because smaller work environments exist underneath a large company umbrella. Checkers and Rally’s Restaurant, Inc. proved that both successful and unsuccessful styles could exist in one company alone. It also proved that even when higher management is trying to promote a certain company culture; it not always will resonate to all parts of the business. CEO and President of Checkers and Rally’s Rick Silva experienced this first-hand by stepping into these small work environments. Through his observations, examples for a Theory X, Theory Y and the potential for a Theory Z work environment were present. The assumption of Theory X workers is that they have low motivation to complete tasks. The two driving forces are monetary reward and fear of losing their job. Management is stringent and has no regards for worker’s well-being, exerting pressure and control whenever possible to get the job done (Venn). What allowed him to have this potential was the fact that Rick was a leader. He had clarity of purpose; he knew in order to get to where he wanted the company to go he needed to listen to the employees. By addressing Stevens’ managing skills, he showed that he also had clarity of values. He wanted the workers to feel empowered and respected. He also wanted them to feel comfortable in performing their jobs by giving them the right tools and best equipment. The creation of the General Managers Council proved that he was willing to lay decision-making responsibilities to something other than the focus groups. Lastly, by agreeing to start a mentoring program, he created the conditions for collective success
