The Ocean has many different and wonderful species but one of the oldest and most fascinating one is the Chelonioidea otherwise known as the Sea Turtle. They have been around since the dinosaurs that’s about 110 million years! There are 7 different species of sea turtles, the Green sea turtle, Leatherback, Loggerhead, Hawksbill, Olive Ridley, Kemps Ridley, and the Leatherback. Six out of the seven species of sea turtles are endangered. Turtles can only stay underwater for a certain amount of time, if they are under for too long, like if they got caught on net the turtle could suffocate and die.

The sea turtles diet consists of, jellyfish, seagrass, and algae. Her gestation is only an estimate but scientist think it lasts from 7-10 weeks. The baby turtles could take as long as a week to be able to dig themselves out of their nests. They tend to hatch at night and use the moon reflecting off of the ocean as a guide to the water. If the temperature of the egg is above 85 degrees fahrenheit the turtle will turn out to be a female. Below 85 degrees fahrenheit the sea turtle will be a male.

When the turtles are bigger you can tell the sex by their tails, if the tail is longer it is a male, they need the longer tail to protect their sex organ. Most turtles can live up to 80 years old or more. Scientist aren’t really able to tell the age of the turtle by just looking at it, they can only tell the age if the turtle was tagged at a young age and was kept track of throughout it’s life. Depending on the species of sea turtles they are able to live up to 150 years old. There are few sea turtles that can live as long as 100 years because of all the threats these turtles face
