Irving Langmuir
The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1932
Irving Langmuir was a Nobel Prize-winning scientist who did groundbreaking work in surface chemistry during the 1900s.Born on January 31, 1881, in Brooklyn, New York; Irving Langmuir studied internationally before teaching in the U.S. and later establishing a long career with General Electric. He made big breakthroughs on the nature of gases, water-based monolayer transfers and atomic structure theory, receiving the chemistry Nobel Prize in 1932. Working in meteorology as well, Langmuir died on August 16, 1957.

Harold Clayton Urey
The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1934
Harold C. Urey was a Nobel Prize-winning scientist who was a key figure in the development of the atomic bomb and made fundamental contributions to a widely accepted theory of the origin of the Earth and other planets. Born on April 29, 1893, in Walkerton, Indiana, Harold C. Urey was American scientist awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1934 for his discovery of the heavy form of hydrogen known as deuterium.

Victor Franz Hess and Carl David Anderson
The Nobel Prize in Physics 1936
Carl D. Anderson and Victor Francis Hess received the 1936 Nobel Prize for Physics for discovering the positron, or the positively charged electron. Carl D. Anderson was born on September 3, 1905, in New York City. In 1930, he graduated with a Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology. Anderson studied X-ray photoelectrons, later studying gamma rays and cosmic rays. He and Victor Francis Hess received a Nobel Prize for Physics in 1936 for discovering positrons, positively charged particles the same size as electrons. Anderson died in San Marino, California, on January 11, 1991

Born: 24 June 1883, Peggau, Austria Died: 17 December 1964, Mount Vernon, NY, USA In reactions between radiation and atoms, charged ions are often produced. Victor Hess, using balloons, measured in 1912 atmospheric ionization as function of altitude. To his surprise he found that the ionization first decreased, but later for the highest altitudes, increased strongly. He concluded that a penetrating radiation is evident on the earth from outside. He could also exclude that this radiation emanates from the sun. Cosmic rays were discovered.
