Chemistry of Soda Pop First, we need to start out with what exactly soda pop is. Soda pop is defined as a sweet drink consisting of soda water, flavoring, and carbonation in the Merriam-Webster dictionary. The first thing that brought about the idea of soda, though this may sound strange, was hot springs. You may say how does this relate? Well, people were really interested in where the bubbles from these hot springs came from. So scientists did some research and found that carbon dioxide and gas carbonium were responsible for the bubbles that people observed in these hot springs.
