In this experiment, a strip of metal is added to four different kind of solution. Students are testing to determine which metal and solution added together will have reaction. When student placing a strip of zinc metal in a copper(II) nitrate solution will produce metallic copper and zinc nitrate, since zinc is above copper on the series. However, a strip of copper placed into a zinc sulfate solution will not produce an appreciable reaction, because copper is below zinc on the series and can't displace zinc ions from solution. The chemical balance equation for zinc metal react with copper(II) nitrate will be: Cu(NO3)2 + Zn = Cu + Zn(NO3)2.
