The era between 1607 and 1763 was an era of migration and settlement. British colonists finally came to the new world to reap its benefits. Throughout history, we discover that a plethora of people came with their own distinct differences. This led to a division between colonies as they adapted to their new home around them. Though some might argue that the New England and Chesapeake colonies have more commonalities due to the fact they are both New World colonies that established representative government. It is clear due to the geographical differences,as well as the social and economic differences these two colonies were distinctly different. Both of these two colonial regions had a colonial representative government. They had these primarily because of England’s policy of salutary neglect which in turn, created the roots of democracy. With the use of slaves and the plantation system the Southern Colonies were more spread out and people didn't live in close proximity to each other.However, New England Colonies were gender balanced and family based so people lived in a community.This was also due to New England colonies being founded by separatist seeking religious freedom.Northern society was religiously based while in the south, church, and religious activities were considered a social event. The different types of societal structures, led life being more different than similar in these two regions. Although the New England and Chesapeake colonies had the similarities of the roots of representative democracy. The differences of geography, economics and social structure make them more different. These differences in colonies set a precedent for the future divide during the civil war era and help shape the America we have today.
