To conduct the chi-squared test of independence, which is used to determine if two variables are independent of each other, we selected race and income. Our first variable, race, is …show more content…
Though income should not be based on race, there are many factors that come into play when explaining why income may be lower in certain races and not others. If we look at society and society’s stereotyping of racial majority and minority, we can suggest that many believe that the racial minority makes less than the racial majority (Deaton, 2003).
We also looked into children who are given more or less opportunities of all races. For example, many racial minorities whose families recently immigrated to the U.S. and are first generation minorities may not have as many opportunities as those who have been in the country for a longer time (User, 2014). Opportunities include things such as college, occupation, and family upbringing. Many people can agree that college is one of the few things that employers look for, however if a certain race is not able to easily access college as another race, he or she may have a lower income than what another race may have for an income (User, 2014). Though income should not be based on race but ability, it eventually comes down to opportunity. Another example of income and race correlating would be in geographic areas where a certain race may reside. For example, if a certain race is more populated in a less fortunate area, the jobs and schooling within the area will make it hard for whoever wants a job including those of the same racial descent. If the jobs and education in a certain area is not of higher standard than other places, the education and race will also be of poorer quality and the opportunity will also be limited due to the the poor conditions (User, 2014). We chose race and income believing that both are dependent of each
