The team’s success continued into 1944. They made it to the Stanley Cup Final once again, only to lose to the Montreal Canadiens in a 4-0 sweep. In 1944 the owner of the Black Hawks, Frederic McLaughlin died. The team was sold to Bill Tobin. Tobin was considered to be controlled by Red Wings owner James E Norris. The next couple years turned out to be a disaster for the Blackhawks, They traded to the Red Wings nearly every good player they had. Over the time period of 1945-1958, the team only managed to qualify for the playoffs twice. The Black Hawks are considered part of a six-team group called the “Original Six”. The team's franchise took a turn for the best when they selected Jonathan Toews third overall in the 2006 NHL entry draft. In 2007 the team won the first overall pick and selected the top prospect, Patrick Kane. Kane and Toews went on to lead the Black Hawks to three Stanley Cups.
