The Chicano Power Movement was a social and political movement that emerged after WWII in response to the oppression experienced by Mexican Americans in the United States. WWII gave Mexican Americans many opportunities in labor, however, they were only paid about 60% of the median family income of a white American. The movement “Chicano Power” was created to empower Mexican Americans and give them a voice, along with combatting institutional racism. They wanted to guarantee equal labor and political rights as well as to increase cultural hegemony. This movement also condemned the high rates of Hispanics being killed in the Vietnam War.
