Ms. Robles states that child abuse is one of the most sensitive topics in the field of family services. Some steps she takes is screening for possible signs. After the screening is conducted additional steps will take place depending on the findings. The child’s safety comes first.
As human services professional how are false accusations handled? Ex: a child accusing her father of child abuse, the later says she is lying.
Situations like these can be abit difficult; we then would interview additional family members and look for signs of abuse. If the accusations are false, this information will have to remain in the file for future reference.
As a human service professional are there certain indicators that you personally look for when doing an investigation? What are these indicators?
Some indicators that I look for are bruises, scars, emotional distress, and sadness to name a few. I make friends with the child so that they can feel that they can trust me and often open up and provide the information we need.
What process does your agency use for identifying sexual abuse and/or child neglect? Which form of abuse is most often seen?
We have a department that only handles child neglect and sexual abuse. After determining this is the case, we get all of our resources together and move forward. The case is handled by a judge and taken very seriously. No child should ever have to suffer any of these types of abuses or neglects. This can range from sexual, physical, and emotional abuse.
