Child sexual abuse has been a long-standing issue in our society for many years. Usually victims are abused by someone who is known to them within the intra-familial system; a parent, step-parent, sibling, etc. or in rare cases, abuse can be perpetrated by someone from the extra-familial system; a teacher, coach, a pastor, school bus driver, etc. No matter the source of the abuse, one undeniable fact is that the victims of child sexual abuse suffer from long-term issues resulting from the abuse. These issues, if not handled appropriately, can become crippling to the victim once they reach adult hood. It is a non-profit treatment program whose mission is “to provide comprehensive prevention and treatment options to facilitate in the on-going process of healing for children, adults and families affected by sexual assault and sexual abuse.” Our program is funded by means of generous donations from members of our community here in St. Lucie County, surrounding counties in addition to grants and fundraising events held throughout the year. Unspoken Words is staffed with well trained professionals who have received specialized training in providing critical therapeutic services to our K-12 clients. Through research and empirical practice, group-based instruction has proven to be extremely effective in primary prevention. At Unspoken Words we are able to teach our kids about prevention of sexual abuse through education specific to personal safety through group sessions usually held during after-school hours. Topics such as identification of no-touch zones; you’d be surprised to know how many children don’t know the proper names of their body parts. We also put emphasis on the difference between good touch, bad touch & questionable touch. Reporting sexual abuse is also focused on in group sessions. Sexual abuse and the element of secrecy perpetuate the cycle of abuse through years if not generations of victims. Proper disclosure to a trusted adult is always encouraged. (Martyniuk, et al.
