Signs and symptoms
Response/treatment
Asthma
Coughing, Wheezing, Tightness of chest, shortness of breath.
Child should have an inhaler from home which they would be able to use under supervision.
Conjunctivitis
Whites of eyes turning pink or red. Swelling of eye lid. Eyes watering. Yellow/ green discharge. Itching, irritation or burning of eye. Sensitivity to bright light.
Initially Child will be sent home. Child will then be allowed back into school once treatment has begun and no longer contagious.
Diabetes
Symptoms may include, excessive thirst, tiredness, weight loss, and visiting the toilet frequently.
If it was suspected diabetes parent would be informed and child would be sent home. If diagnosed diabetes school would support the child and adhere to whatever was required. Children usually administer own medication (or parent will) Child will be allowed to eat whenever necessary and activites would be monitored.
Diarrhoea and vomiting
being sick and upset stomach.
Child would be sent home until symptoms have completely stopped. Child would not be allowed back into school until 48 hours after symptoms have stopped.
Eczema
Red itchy rash. May bleed and scab if scratched.
If cream is sent from home child would be allow to apply or a staff member if consent from home is given.
Epilepsy
Make sure child cannot hurt themselves. Move all furniture to make sure child cannot harm themselves. Wait with child until episode stops.
Give child quiet time to come round. Offer water. If child has another episode an ambulance will be rung and parents informed.
Chicken pox
Red itchy lumps that appear all over the body.
No treatment from school, child would be sent home until no longer infectious.
German measles (rubella)
Mild fever, swelling of lymph nodes in back of neck or behind ears, itchy rash of red or pink spots.
Chid would be sent home
Impetigo
Blisters or sores appearing on the skin
No treatment in school, child would be sent home until no longer infectious
Measles
Spotty rash on skin
No treatment given in school, child would be sent home.
Meningitis
Fever, lethargy, irritability, headache, eyes sensitive to light, stiff neck, skin rashes, seizures.
