The two most meaningful experiences I’ve had have one thing in common: they were experiences where I was thrown into situations that I was not ready to handle. They were both situations where succeeding came at the cost of something else, whether it be free time, academic performance, or mental stability. They were my first lab experience and going through with the prosecution of my childhood sexual abuse case. I started working a lab job during the first week of my freshman year. Although I was lucky to get into the lab so early in my college career, I also had no experience in a biology lab. Every technique was new, every concept was difficult to understand, and my training was a long arduous process. I did this while balancing a full course load, and dealing with an undiagnosed chronic skin condition. It was much more than I expected to take on when I agreed to a lab job. However, the reason why I continued with the opportunity for another two years is because I ultimately enjoyed the work I was doing. I was happy when I solved a problem, I was nervous when awaiting sequencing results, and there was something soothing about the ability to end a long day of classes with the calm setting of a lab. …show more content…
All of a sudden I needed to go to sleep at a reasonable time so I could run into lab early before class. I needed to be more organized about my commitments, I needed to keep up with my lab projects, and at all costs I needed to do better with my classes. By my second semester I felt more stable, finally the 20 hours a week I had been putting into lab paid off. I was trained I was comfortable and I was slowly becoming the reliable and dependable student that I always wanted to be.
