At this time Chillingworth is unaware of Dimmesdale’s true identity, but quickly discovers the truth. Dimmesdale is the most effected by the revenge. Chillingworth constantly pressures Dimmesdale into telling him what his secret his throughout the novel in a descret way, such as asking if he’s told him everything about why he feels sick, “ Hath all the operation of this disorder been faitly laid open and recounted to me?” (Chapter 10,page 212). From this he causes Dimmesdale to panic, “ With a frantic gesture, he rushed out of the room.”(Chapter 10 page 212). In Chapter 11, being so paniced under Chillingworth’s eye, he begins to hate public admiration because he feels guilty that he is fake. “ It is inconceivable, the agony with which this public veneration tortured him.” (Chapter 11, page 224) Feeling this way in Chapter 12, Dimmesdale feels as if he can’t take it anymore causing Dimmesdale to go to the scaffold in the middle of the night and show everyone who he truely is. He went up there and shrieked expecting the town to hear him and see him but nothing happened.
