The American Dream is the concept that anyone in America can have a fulfilling career that allows them to provide for their family, purchase and own property, and eventually pass down said property to ultimately establish generational wealth. This dream motivates people worldwide to migrate to America in hopes that they can strive for success and a better life for themselves and their families than the one they had in their homeland. However, because of the widespread white supremacy in the U.S., this dream was totally unachievable for Chinese immigrants. White supremacy made the American Dream unachievable by banning suffrage for Chinese immigrants in Oregon's Constitution in 1857, by prohibiting employers from hiring Chinese laborers with California’s Constitution in 1879, and by banning Chinese laborers from migrating to the U.S. and prohibiting Chinese immigrants from gaining citizenship with the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. …show more content…

For example, within Section 6 of the Constitution of Oregon, it says, “No Negro, Chinaman, or Mulatto shall have the right of suffrage.” This means Chinese immigrants would have no say on laws that impacted their ability to have employment freedom, and their ability to purchase and own property.
