The continuation of this scene reveals multiple compelling emotions from the reader. On one hand, you can sense the righteousness of some of the churchgoers but then you can also sense Chipo’s pain and Darling’s dilemma between the two sides. It is a little difficult to read about a young girl struggling with her surrounding in such a way. Her name is Darling, she seems to really try to take on other’s pain and help. I think her ironic use of names is a coping mechanism to deal with the reality of her situation. Within the first couple of chapter of the novel it is shown how women are sexualized, yet again. Women are not seen as strong, and free they are considered impure. Darling also says how boys are supposed to be born first because men are considered more powerful.
