Cholangitis is an infection of the common bile duct, this duct carries bile from the liver to the intestines and gallbladder for digesting food. This bile is produced by the liver for the purpose of digestion of food. Cholangitis is often caused by bacterial infections which can also be spread to other organs such as the liver. Bacterial infections can occur when the bile duct is blocked by a tumor or gallstone. People at risk include people with prior history of HIV, common duct narrowing, foreign travel, or gallstones. Possible symptoms of Cholangitis include fever, pain or clamps, nausea, chills, vomiting, dark urine, jaundice or odd colored stool.
