From the story of ‘The Lorax’, we can see that on one side of this war are people and corporations who would exploit the mother nature’s natural resources for their own profit. While on the other side are the people and wildlife who need those same resources for them as shelter, breeding habitat, and available food. This is a story about Once-ler, who saw economic opportunity in the Lorax’s home which has a lot of Truffula Trees to create a product called Thneeds. The Once-ler begins to chop trees and making Thneeds four time faster, never consider about the long-term effects on the environment. This story shows the illegal logging is destroying critical habitat for the endangered wildlife in the forest, such as orangutan. As important as forests are both environmentally and economically, many of our global forests are suffering from deforestation. From what I see from a research, between 2000-2010, an average of 13 million hectares were deforested globally each year. This huge amount of harvest may get a quick profit, but how will the people generate revenue once the forests are gone just like the Truffula Trees in the story? The Once-ler insists that he is just serving the society by creating the Thneeds, which he claims that everyone needs the product. But in my opinion, many of our “needs” are manufactured via advertising as most of the “needs” are not necessary for our survival. Besides, the Once-ler will be ended up closing his factory because he failed to manage its production at the beginning. The most important factor for a production is long-term profits via sustainable development. The Once-ler did not consider about the sustainability of the ingredients to make his product. If the development is not sustainable, it will be a dead-end road. Besides, this story shows us
