The bottom line is it didn’t. Chris from what is known was a mentally competent man who was extremely independent and to himself. His sister Carine states, “he was very to himself. He wasn’t antisocial-he always had friends, and everybody liked him-but he could go off and entertain himself for hours. He didn’t seem to need toys or friends. He could be alone without being lonely” (Krakauer 107). It is evident through this example that from a young age Chris didn’t need to rely on anyone, even his parents for that matter, for stability. Stability in the sense that he would be able to support himself emotionally without any other outside person. Now ask yourself, what mentally competent and abnormally independent person would allow something in their life to have such a drastic affect on their wellbeing? Chris without a doubt would not be that person. In conclusion, Chris McCandless had the right and responsibility to his own autonomy. No one, no matter who you were, would change that about him. With that in mind it is easy to see that Chris’s recklessness and faulty ambition did ultimately lead to his death. It was McCandless’s responsibility to make sure that he was equipped with the knowledge and basic skills to survive in an unknown environment. He somehow managed to fail or neglect this simple, possibly life saving
