Christopher Columbus, a man commonly known as an ionic "hero" who supposedly was the first person to have discovered the "New World." Many people think his explorations of the Americas sparked a global exchange of; goods, riches, food, animals, people and diseases, called "The Columbian Exchange." While it may be true that his explorations caused the Columbian Exchange that was not the only thing his explorations caused. When Columbus came over the Americas he caused decades of torture and enslavement and also completely wiped out innocent native populations of Hispaniola. When Columbus arrived to the island he was greeted by these Indians who walked around without clothes and he instantly gives them things to get on their good side "in order that they be friendly to us- to some of them I gave red caps, and glass beads" (Zinn, 31). In result of Columbus killing and torturing so many natives he wiped out populations and destroyed cultures. Columbus and his team where the first Christians to; "destroy and depopulate" (Zinn, 38) a race in America. Following the blood bath upon arrival of Columbus and the Spaniards the natives, that lived there, nearly died off "having a population that I estimated to be more than three millions, has now a population of barely 200 persons" (Zinn, 36). His reasoning behind this was to, collect as much gold as possible and take control of the island, Hispaniola. The purpose of these documents is to expose the truth. The truth that Christopher Columbus was not a hero who changed the world for the better. Rather he was a cruel and greedy man who changed the world for the worse by wiping out native populations and enslaving and torturing millions of people in unimaginable
