Christopher Columbus affected the New World and the Indians negatively through religious, social, and geographical change.
Christopher Columbus set sail for India and came upon the New World. He encountered the natives of the land which he would call Indians. Columbus strongly mistreated these natives especially through religion. One of Columbus’ goals was to help spread Christianity. Instead of simply spreading the word, Columbus would force the religion upon the Indians, thus resulting in animosity between the two.
Even though slavery was already common with the Indians, Columbus attempted and succeeded in enslaving the natives. By force, Columbus captured many Indians and took them back to Spain.
