Christopher Columbus was a devote catholic and when he traveled on his first voyage west it was August 3, 1942. “He was convinced that God had chosen him to reach that land, hidden from the Western world for ages, which the Roman philosopher Seneca had once prophesied would be revealed. His discovery would bring the Catholic Faith, to which he was devoted, to the people who lived in that land.” At times, he was known for wearing the Franciscan habit to show his outward commitment to the Catholic Church and would open his letters with the sign of the cross. He referred to himself as “Christbearer” because of his high thought of Christ and wanted others to know that about him. He was much more than just a captain of a ship, he was also interested in speaking to anyone about his faith in Catholicism. I chose this source because it was from an encyclopedia and I am wondering if my informant knows that Christopher Columbus was such a devote catholic.

John F. Kennedy becomes the youngest man ever to be elected president and began his presidency on November 8, 1960. Being Catholic was in the forefront of his campaign and there were concerns that he would be allowed by the Catholic faith to make important national decisions. Kennedy focused on the many critical issues like the spread of Communism influence, the hungry children he saw in the rural mid-west, the elderly issues of paying for their healthcare, and to many American living in the slums with too few schools.
Kennedy said, “These are the factual issues which should decide this campaign. And they are not religious issues — for war and hunger and ignorance and despair know no religious barriers.” (Kennedy)
