I feel that is difficult to understand key figures with mixed legacies. These people often times did some great things for their culture but destroyed another in the process. Even though some of the advancements can be viewed as negative; there is potential for an understanding point of view. Christopher Columbus is a great example of a legend with a mixed legacy. Many people feel the Columbus should know be acknowledged as a grand explorer who aided in the development of this great country. On his journey to conquer a new land, many innocent Native Americans were removed from their native land. While it is difficult to say how much hurt he caused, we can conclude that Columbus definitely did some foul things in order to gain what he needed. When you read Columbus' letters, it is very clear that he did not view the things he did as negative. The European mindset of conquering and expanding took over his mindset and ruled his quest. We almost cannot blame him for the way this country was founded and its dark past. I feel that Columbus and other Europeans were definitely invaders, and these people could have took a different approach to expansion. Even though this is a horrendous past, there is still beauty in the end. Yes, Europeans created a lot of harm and hurt in our country's past, but imagine a country without diversity. The expansion of European empires brought forth many other cultures in this country. Ultimately, creating one of the greatest, strongest, and most diverse countries in the world. While our country still struggles with acceptance and privilege based mentalities, we are still very fortunate when we compare our lives to those in other countries. I feel we should take are, expose their flaw, and work to prevent it from happening
