Chung Thi Kim Pham, generally addressed as Kim, was born in Vietnam five years after the conclusion of the United States war against Vietnam. Following her migration to the U.S., she was raised in San Francisco, close to where she continues to reside, to this day. Kim’s parents, Sau Van Pham and Dang Thi Nguyen, and she were immigrants in the U.S. for seventeen years until they became citizens. During her youth Kim and her three siblings, all held a rebellious streak even with their traditional upbringing. She and her siblings: Mai Chuc, Henry Hien Quoc, and Tam Van Pham all drove their parents mad with their antics. While in college her aspiration was to be a teacher, but she never quite managed to finish and acquire her bachelor’s degree due to the challenges she faced: juggling going to college four days a week, being a single mother, and working full time to support her family of two. After quitting college, she continued her work at a printing company where she was required to undertake multiple positions, such as graphic design and customer service. Two years later her husband, the father of her child, was released from prison. After another two years of working under the same company, she was laid off, furthermore, as a result of a slump in the economy she stayed unemployed for an extended period of time. Kim and her sister, Mai Pham, were both enrolled in cosmetology school while her husband, Khanh Tran, was in culinary, then one day she and her husband decided to take a risk and open a business, specifically a restaurant.
