In the book City Of Ashes by Cassandra Clare, Magnus Bane is a sarcastic, self-centered character who is insensitive to other people's feelings. Magnus is not very helpful in any situation that does not involve witchcraft. Clare writes “Maia's eyes suddenly filled with tears. Clary looked toward Magnus in horror-he looked equally shocked, she noticed-and then to Luke.”(274). The author states that Magnus looks horrified to show readers that he has very little ability to deal with emotional situations. He is also very sarcastic which makes the other characters become rather agitated with him. In a conversation with Clary and Alec, Magnus says “I don't know...does [Jace] normally just lie on the floor like that without moving?”(135). Magnus’s actions show that he will do anything if it will benefit him, even if it is possible that he could end up hurting his boyfriend. Magnus is always the center of attention. It doesn't matter what is going on, as soon as he enters the room heads turn.“Even the Inquisitors eyebrows shot up when Magnus strode through the gate.”(125-126). The Inquisitor does not care about Magnus, he just has that presence that makes people notice him. Additionally Magnus always wears the most out there outfits. “Magnus in a long, swirling cape that looked as if it were decorated with bits of crushed glass.”(231). He even wears glitter as an accessory, “He shimmered with layer of glitter.”(126). This explains why everyone's heads always turn wherever he goes. Magnus even shooed Clary out of the bathroom, “I need to get in there; my hair is a wreck.”(272) One could infer that Magnus is very concerned with how he looks.
