The Civil War was one of the most important wars in American history. In 1865, the North and the South went to war over slavery. The most important causes of the civil war were the election of 1860 and the raid on Harper's Ferry because the first event led to division of the union and the second event led to the secession of the southern states.

To begin, the Raid on Harper's Ferry was one of the most important causes of the Civil War because it led to division with the south being scared similar events would happen. In document 8 it states”Now, if I must die for the cause of justice, let it be done. If I must mix my blood with the blood of my children and the blood of slaves, let it be done! Their rights are ignored because of unfair laws.
