Alan Moore's watchmen was an interesting take on a superhero story similar to Captain America:Civil War while also being its own thing. It came out many years before Civil War came out but it has similarities. It’s dark twists make it much more interesting as you go along and that's what makes the book so good. Watchmen constantly has a depressing feel of impending doom that is littered throughout the story in many different ways and characters.

Each character has their own depressing dynamic of how they are handling the world after the Keene act(the act that keeps them from operating without the government.) We have Dr.Manhattan who works in an army base with only guards and his girlfriend Ms.jupiter for company as he does his experiments in the isolation of the base. Nite-Owl spends his time looking at his old equipment and constantly repairing it. Some of the heroes are old and retired like the Hood who wrote a book about his time as a member of the crime busters. Rorschach still fights crime in the shadows as a vigilante who does whatever he has to in order to catch a criminal. They all go about their lives up until the murder of Edward Blake the comedian.

Upon learning this information he informs every other superhero he knows that there may be a plot to kill all the superheroes. This seems more and more likely as someone frames Dr manhattan as he retreats to mars and Ozymandias is almost assassinated.
