In this source analysis paper, I will be discussing aspects of the civil war. I will be addressing a soldier’s letter, the textbook and an article online. My purpose is to describe how and why the civil war started, and what were people’s feelings about it. By analyzing the selected text, I can provide an insight to how the atmosphere was during this time period.
If I was to describe the Civil War in one sentence, it would be that it was a war that took place from 1861 to 1865 between the northern and southern states of the United States due to the south being in favor of slavery and the north opposing it. The letter appears to be stained and folded in many places, it is written in black ink and the paper is yellow. J.C. Morris wrote the letter and properly addressed it to his wife Amanda Morris in 1863 from a camp near Arkansas. Morris begins his letter by letting his wife know that he has not written to her in a long time. He points out that they have been on a raid, but he does not have enough time to go into detail, he just says they killed a “good many” amount of people. Morris states that they fought nearly all day on a Sunday two weeks ago. He expresses his love to his family by writing “I never wanted to see you half as bad in all my life as I do now.” (Morris, 1863). As expected, the soldier explains how their horses are out of shape and that they found food, but unfortunately, they don’t even have time to feed them because they spend most of their time traveling day and night. He fears his letter will not get sent out, so he quickly wraps up by saying that he loves his family and will try to write to them more often. All in all, the soldier J.C. Morris is writing to his wife to let her know that they have killed many people and that time is very limited, but he truly loves and misses his family. Before the war, the northern states in the United States had a well-established manufacturing industry, while the southern states relied heavily on farming depended on slaves to grow crops like tobacco for their economy. When the Kansas Nebraska Act was passed, which assured slavery to newly acquired territories, the Republican Party was formed in response to terminate slavery with Abraham Lincoln being a part of them (Civil War, 2009). As a result of Lincoln’s election in 1860, many southern states feared that he would abolish slavery and seceded the union and became known as the Confederates who started the Civil War in Fort Sumter (Civil War, 2009). After fighting back and forth continuously, Lincoln passed the Emancipation Proclamation which freed all slaves in rebellious states and eventually leading to the Confederate’s surrender on April 9, 1865 officially ending the Civil War (Civil War, 2009). Unfortunately, just 5 days after that, president Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by a confederate (Civil
