Claire is a relevant character that reflects readers the feelings of race. I have this impression because she feels uncomfortable with her own dark color of skin perceiving herself as an ugly and " inferior person. Marie Chaveux constructs this character like that because she wants to highlights the issues of skin color, complexity and biases in Haitian society during its foundation.Claire shows the readers her deep frustration for being black by internalizing her feelings of color issues.
