Classroom Observations
Since I did a week straight I combine my observations in one essay but wrote about two separate days and lessons specifically. Attached are pictures of my favorite activity. Thanks again for everything sorry I didn’t get this to you it was finished too which was the worst part.
Class Observation Report
On Monday, February through Friday, February 27th, I observed a series of lessons during a class in ESL Services. The instructor Angelica Ortiz was an amazing mentor and truly taught me the meaning behind what being an educator is all about. Since I do not have teaching experience in the classroom , this was quite a learning experience having to compare yourself to a seasoned teacher.
First off, I would like to discuss the instructor’s overall goals for the class, due to the fact she has many. She strives for her students to improve their fluency reading vocabulary, problem solving accuracy, the ability to use the read aloud new material, trace the letters and sound them out, touch spell words, identify numbers, the ability to use do the problem-based interactive learning, visual learning, differentiating using quick check masters, working with numbers given a set of common denominators for fractions with unlike common denominators (CCSS 5.NF.1,5,NF.1,5 N.F.-3,5,NBT.3.b), and so much more. Her high expectations for her students showed me to never underestimate the ability of these children and push them to strive to always do their best.
For this particular week Mrs.Ortiz taught the students about algerbra and how to Identify when two expressions are equivalent. For example, the expressions y + y + y and 3 and 3y are equivalent because they name the same number regardless of which number y stands for. On day one in the class period I attended, students were taught how to identify like terms and write learned how to write out different equations to make them the same. She made sure to have all vocabulary words written on note cards for each student and helped them sound the words out the beginning of the period and throughout the week started with the refreshing of these words which I thought was a great idea. She always made sure the students read the instructions aloud to practice the English Language. After day one of observing the different learning techniques she used with the promethium board and watching which tools such as a multiplication table and set of glashcards, I started to learn new things I could use when it is my turn to be the lead teacher in my own classroom.
Throughout the week I also noticed that the lessons were creatively design and activities of the lesson were well thought out by the instructor who included a little bit of everything. During the last day, to make sure the students’ fully understood her lessons I feel she found great technique to keep students interested. Attached to this paper will be the pictures from this activity I liked it so much I had to share it with you. She had a bucket full of magnets’ to represent the different terms and had the students lay them out to help solve the different fraction problems and write out the algebra expressions. The students loved this and were quite involved, which was a great assessment for Mrs.Ortiz to make sure she was doing her job in showing them how to correctly do the work.
“I always like to through some type of hands on, fun activity in my lessons towards the end and use it as an informal assessment in order to ensure I did my job in instilling the core currilum behind the lessons within my students.They appreciate that after working so hard to grasp the concept throughout the week, great Friday lesson to reward them.” Mrs. Ortiz mentioned to me while doing the lessons with the class.
Over all, It was a small, intimate classroom of about fifteen students. Within the first five minutes of class, students were asked to write
