Claudio Monteverdi was a key figure in the Renaissance due to the fact that he introduced operatic music to Italy. Monteverdi became a well-known composer when the current maestro di Cappelli or master of the choir, passed away and Monteverdi took his place. After receiving the role, he moved straight to Venice. In Venice, Monteverdi began to write operas, being one of the first to do this, he is known as one of the creators of this genre. In total, he wrote over 5 operas however only 2 have survived. One of them is L’Orfeo. L’Orfeo was not only one of Monteverdi’s finest pieces but is one of the earliest performed operas that are still performed today.
