Most pennies get dirty and rusty over time. People never really think about how to clean them though. I am going to be testing to see what edible substances work best for cleaning pennies. I will be using a variety of foods to test. I am excited to see what the results are.
Background Information:
There are many diffrent foods known for cleaning pennies. Such as keteup, baking soda, and even coke! This experiment works for fruits. This is because each fruit has a certain almount of citric acid. The more citric acid the fruit contains the faster it will clean the pennys copper oxide. Some other foods just clean pennies because they have so many chemicals in them, Some of these foods include of Coke, Sprite, and Mountain Dew. Well, I think thats enough background information. Lets go into my hypothisis now.
Hypothesis:
I belive that only one or two of the foods that I test will clean the pennies. I think this because a few of the foods seem to have citric acid in it, which is known to clean pennies. Some of the other foods don’t have acid in it, so they may not do anything. Other foods have very strong chemicals in them. If I make sure to keep the pennies in edible substances for for an even almount of time, with an even almont of food, then I will know that there will be an equal chance for each penny to get clean. Which will show …show more content…
It went from crusty and old to looking shiny and brand new. The other pennies had diffrent results. The ketup penny barely cleaned at all. I feel there was a small change, but nothing huge. The lemon juice broke down the penny. It made it very sticky, and I had to keep refill the cup with more of the juice because it would dry up and get crusty. The vinigar broke down the pennys top layer to the point where I could peel it off. The Vinigar and Lemon Juice had similar reactions. The Orange Juice cleaned it a little bit. Some of the rust came off, but that is mostly
