The job of intelligence operations is to understand our enemy’s plans and intentions; the job of counterintelligence is to identify and exploit our enemy’s intelligence operations. All around the world and since there has been information held secret; someone else has wanted to obtain that information. One way this acquisition of information is accomplished is through the use of spies. Some spies steal information of minor damage to a nation while others steal secrets that could lead to the damnation of the entire world. In the intelligence community, some spies are widely recognized, and others fall to the wayside due to lack of media attention and close held details on the spy’s activities. Conrad was a senior Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) in the United States Army, a Sergeant First Class. Conrad spent over sixteen years of his twenty-year Army career stationed in Germany. He spoke fluent German and in 1969 he even married a German woman by the name of Antje. When Conrad married his wife, she already had two children and not long after the marriage Conrad and Antje had a child of their own. Conrad was an NCO described as a hard working, dependable, trusted, and well liked person by his subordinates, peers, and supervisors. This led to multiple instances where his supervisors used their government connections to keep Conrad assigned to his position. Conrad’s position was an assignment within the G3 War Plans Section, the operational management element, of the 8th Infantry Division at Bad Kreuznach, West Germany under the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Conrad earned a positive reputation through his work habits and was often referred to as Mr. Plans. His eventual marriage and addition of three children to his financial spending requirements coupled with a top secret security clearance, direct access to a vault filled with classified information and the keys to classified photocopy machine created an opportune target for the recruitment of a spy by outside intelligence …show more content…
Gregory was one of the several military members who Ramsey recruited in order to broaden the placement and access of the spy ring. Gregory’s participation in the spy ring included the collection and transmission of the sensitive and classified military information to be passed to foreign intelligence entities.
