Choose either the Central Nervous System (CNS) or the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) and describe what it consists of and all of its functions. Be as detailed as you can; this will help you understand the nervous system better. Describe the one thing that fascinated you most about this system.
Choose one nervous system disorder and describe how they affect the structures and function of the nervous system.
The nervous system is perhaps the most miraculous invention of evolution, and is shared by not only human beings, but the majority of animals on this planet. This system is subdivided into two major components: The central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. Together, they provide the fundamental functions required to perceive, comprehend, and respond to our ever changing world. The nervous system also operates the body’s essential functions, such as the cardiovascular, respiratory and digestive systems; it controls behavior and provides our quality of life. There are three different kinds of neurons: sensory neurons, which collect information about stimuli from various parts of the body and relay it to the spinal cord and brain; interneurons in the spinal cord and brain receive and process this sensory input and send signals to other neurons; last are motor neurons, which relay signals from interneurons to muscles and glands. Also known as effectors, motor neurons carry out responses from the brain or spinal cord. Additionally, there are two types of nervous tissue within the CNS: Gray matter, which consists of nerve cell bodies, dendrites, and axons that are organized either in layers or in clusters called nuclei. The other type of nervous tissue is called white matter, which consist mostly of axons. White matter gets its name from the white myelin sheathing over the
