Although Coco Chanel lived a very luxurious life, she did not grow up in a wealthy household. Gabrielle Bonheur is her full name and she had five siblings. “She was born in 1883 in a hospice for the poor in the Loire Valley” (Warner 21). At a young age, her mother passed away and her father sent her to an orphanage. Gabrielle did not like the orphanage and fled to a Catholic boarding school for girls. At the boarding school, she was raised by nuns who taught her how to sew. This was a useful skill that helped her later in life.
