Contrast the remedial and compensatory approach for cognitive deficits. (how do they differ give an example) Utilize chapter 22 of Mental Health Concepts and Techniques.
The compensatory approach aims to substitute personal strengths and environmental supports when cognitive deficits are impaired. The resolution tries to provide enough structure and support to allow the person to accomplish a precise task. For example, a caregiver may leave a prepared cold lunch on a shelf in the refrigerator for a person with dementia who lives at home; which compensate for the person not able to prepare the food safely and allow the person to eat by himself or herself without the caregiver.
The remedial approach aims to enhance underlying abilities and support the reintegration for cognitive functions. The approach is very time-consuming and not necessarily effective. For example, using computer games to improve sequencing, memory, orientation, and concentration can help in remediating cognitive deficits.
