I agree with the author that cohabitation in the United States is an “alternative to being single” instead of an alternative to being married” or a “prelude to being married”. Because the couples in this days once they start dating they may decide to live together. The decision of living together most of the time is not based on planning to get married and build a family. But in certain times is based on other factor such as finance, desire to know the partner and see if they may work us couple or not. Another thing that made me see that cohabitation is alternative to being single because the couples don’t have any benefit comparing to the married couple. For example the cohabiting couples may not fil for retirement benefit together if they
