I had the pleasure of analyzing a piece of Coles writing to see where he is at this point in the year. A student writing develops considerably during first grade so it is important to keep track of each student’s development. During my analysis I looked at Cole’s concepts about print, spelling, and composition. All of these elements can reveal a great deal about his writing. I will also go over Cole’s strengths and weaknesses. This will help to identify where we need to work to help him to excel when writing.
Cole excelled when I analyzed his concepts about print. He completely understands directionality when writing. This means he know that pages and sentences go from left to right. He also understands that words start at the top of the page

These stages include; pre-communicative, semi-phonetic, phonetic, transitional, and conventional. I analyzed different words from Coles writing to see which stage they fell into. Many of Coles’ words were in the phonetic stage. This stage simply means that Cole is relying on using phonics to spell his words. I categorized many of his words in this stage because it was evident that he was spelling strictly by sounding out the words. Cole also had other words that fell into the transitional stage. In this stage Cole is still using some phonics to determine spelling. He is also using methods to find the correct spelling by recognizing how the word looks using visual memory. Cole had a few words in this category because he was using both visual memory and phonics to spell his words. Cole also spelled words that fell into the conventional stage. This stage exemplifies that Cole has mastered the spelling of these particular words. He uses all of his spelling techniques to spell the word correctly. Overall, I characterized Coles invented spelling with the transitional stage. I did this because he was able to include techniques from phonetic, transitional, and conventional stages. He is developing his spelling to move from using phonics to visual memory, and then to mastering the word
