Moore explores the concepts of race in preadolescents and how they form “race category membership” by evaluating each other's actions. She also uses “clique dynamics” to document race-based cliques. The first camp was considered a “typical” camp with the majority of children being predominantly white 70, to 10 Blacks. All 15 counselors were white, and the children were ages 6-12. The second camp was considered a “cultural awareness” camp that advertized respect for cultural diversity, committed to providing a non-sexist, non-racist environment and, encouraged the children self awareness and cultural awareness. The camp had strict rules where the counselors were encouraged "to discuss issues of discrimination, responsibility, cooperation, and current events” with the students. Moore’s observations also had her analyzing the language in which kids used to self identify, she called this “race categorization language”. Moore notes this race is something people of color have and whites lack therefore, whites see their day to day interactions as normal, neutral as if it's the norm. In my own experience it was the opposite to those of the white students, I grew up going to a predominantly Latino and Black populated schools and I thought that was the norm, hence the This could produce the mentality that racism no longer exists. Being unaware of race can also lead to the creation of racism because they have not been exposed to other cultures and it can create assumptions of other cultures.
The staff at the "cultural awareness" help kids accountable when self-segregating bringing awareness to the issue but while they did this they also pointed out the different groups and “simultaneously validating the self-segregation practices of the kids of color, based upon their understanding of the current significance of race category membership in the larger
