According to Lindsey Cook (2014) in “Is the College Admissions Bubble About to Burst?”, the stress and the competition for getting into the right universities are exaggerating compared to the past. Due to some changing circumstances over the past decades, the process of college admissions has changed remarkably. Since there are more students thinking about going to colleges, it is more competitive for them to get into colleges compared to their parents’ generation, where not as many people had considered going to universities. Also, colleges are showing larger gender and racial acceptance, which implies the diversity of students. The increase of international students in the USA has brought a higher competition to American students.
In addition to the number of students, there are more conditions that caused the change in the college admission process. Now that so many students have great SAT/ACT scores and grades, colleges are looking for something more that attracts their attention. Thus, the time students spend on homework and AP courses has grown as well. Furthermore, elite schools even expect students to have unique dimensions of their personalities, such as speaking other languages than English, playing instruments or being a part of volunteering programs. Georgia Tech was my dream school that I had been willing to go for years until I got rejected. The email said that since there were so many students applied to the same school, they cannot offer me a space at Georgia Tech. Last year, a student, who had similar grades with similar activities and also a from Korea, got into Georgia tech. This shows that increase in the application does lower the acceptance rate. There was definitely more competition this year’s pool compared to the last year one due to the number of applicants. Therefore, I believe that the number of students affect the acceptance
