I was always the shy and quiet Asian girl that exceeded in school. I was a follower, a person who had ideas of her own but never spoke up and therefore would choose the easier path of bandwagoning. High school was the perfect cover for me, I could blend in with students and hide at the back of the classroom. While I had other extracurricular activities that tested me as a leader, such as my job as a tutor, I never went past my comfort zone.

My shy attitudes abruptly changed when threats of repealing the Affordable Care Act appeared on the news. This insurance policy saved my family thousands of dollars that we otherwise could not afford. The next day, I felt a passionate fire burning when my history class engaged in a discussion about the impact of this policy and how youth could combat it. I began to see a place for myself in this effort, and my worries transformed into a personal goal to become the driven person I had to be in order

I joined the academy due to rumors of exciting hands-on experiments which could enrich my knowledge in the science field. I knew that this class had a smaller staff to student ratio: 11 students, one teacher, and one teacher’s assistant. This meant that special attention would be focused on me. While I dreaded this, I knew this academy would be a pathway for me to enter the health field.

I worked hard in this class. I was forced to actively participate in class discussions and share my opinions in ideas. I slowly but surely realized that the classroom setting was a safe space for me to share my ideas, and I developed a subtle confidence in that what I had to say mattered. With this newfound confidence, I began to ask more questions, thus understanding biotech and science more deeply than most of my peers.
