College Admissions Essay: Moving To A New City

I sat alone in my seat on the bus. It was so early that the sun hadn’t yet risen. I could hear people talking around me, but I didn’t know any of their voices. So I just sat there, hoping that this wasn’t a harbinger for how my first day would go. I imagined how this might be different if I hadn’t just moved to this town 2 months ago. This may have the makings of a sad and, but let me assure you, there is a happy ending. It didn’t matter to me where I was going to move to because I didn’t want to move. My new town, Holmdel, NJ was only twenty minutes away from my old town, but it felt like I was moving to the other side of the world. In my old town, I saw that for the new people who moved in, it was a struggle for them to find friends and adapt to a new school. To help counteract this, I joined sports teams as early as I could to help me make friends. I played a sport in all 3 seasons that year with cross country, basketball, and lacrosse. From the coaches to my teammates, I made friendships that would last all throughout high school. I started the year not knowing anyone, and finished the year with as many friends as I had made in 9 years in my old town. While at the beginning moving to a new town was really challenging for me, it actually helped me grow as a person and expand my social skills. I am a better and more complete person for having gone through the move. On the academic side, going through this process may have hurt my grades at first, but I have had a consistent upward trend in GPA every year in high school. I had trouble balancing the challenges that came with being at a new school and the heavier workload that came with being in high school at first. But as the years went on I finally understood the level of dedication to my work that is needed to do
