Section A: Purpose of Study: The purpose of this study is to discover why the performance level of men’s college basketball players decreases, during games, when coaches use negative verbal and non-verbal communication as a way to correct player errors. This study is important in the field of communication because it will help us understand how to communicate on an interpersonal level, more effectively using positive feedback, which will benefit college athletes in the job force when they start their career.

Section B: Research Question: What are the differences, in player performance, when coaches communicate through negative feedback, compared to when coaches communicate through positive reinforcement?

Maybe the players aren’t working hard on defense or they ran a play wrong and that caused them to get into some trouble with the coach. I found it more difficult to perform at my best, during games, when the coach would show frustration and aggression in his feedback because, instead of me being fully involved in the game, I would try to correct my mistakes to make the coach happy. However, if my coach used positive reinforcement, as a means of giving me feedback, I was more inclined to understand him more clearly and use his feedback to my advantage. The reason for asking this specific question is to show how college basketball player’s performances decrease when the coach puts added pressure on them. Finally, having a high trust level and a strong relationship with the coach will create respect between them and will build a successful
