Colonel Harland David Sanders was born on September 9, 1890, in Henryville, Indiana. His father was a butcher and his mother stayed at home. He also had two younger siblings. At age five Harland’s father died which meant he had to take more responsibility. His mother had to work at a tomato peeling factory because of the lack of money coming into the household.
With his mother working long hours Sanders had to take care of his younger siblings, and when doing that he learned how to cook. When he turned ten he held his first job working on a farm. After a while, since his family was so poor, he left school to work full time on the farm. His mother, tired of being so poor, married a farmer near the city of Indianapolis when he turned twelve. He and his new stepfather did not get along and he was sent back to his home county.

He worked on the farm until he was 15 and then got a job as a streetcar conductor. In 1906, even though he was below the age, he enlisted in the army and was stationed in Cuba. After discharging from the Army he married Josephine King in Jasper, Alabama. Eventually, they had three children and moved all around the south then moved back to Alabama. After problems with their marriage, they divorced in 1947.
After their divorce, Sanders held many jobs. He sold insurance and started a steamboat company. After some time, he took the job of a secretary at the Columbus Chamber of Commerce. While he was there, he met an investor who gave him a new design for natural gas lamps. Sanders patented the new design and tried to sell his lamps, but no one would buy
