Colors can be used in many ways in a novel. They can represent deep feelings such as emotions, love and friendship. Most colors tell emotions. For example yellow is used as the color of sunshine and it’s associated with joy, happiness and energy. Writers often use the colors to show emotion. They can also be used to give vivid imagery. In beloved colors have their own meanings, sometimes they are confusing but at most times they show symbolism and intricacy. The two of the most used colors in the novel are black and white.

Colors in beloved are very important. They are used to show vivid imagery. Red is the most bright color which is mostly used to represent blood, pain,death. Morrison uses lots of examples and the uses of red:The blood of her breast milk, the baby’s blood, the roosters red comb, Paul D’s red heart. Here are many examples of showing the uses of colors."...leaving their grandmother, Baby Suggs; Sethe, their mother; and their little sister, Denver, all by themselves in the gray and white house on Bluestone Road" (4). This shows the color grey and the house stands alone and is dull because there are only three left in the house. Color in this quote represent loneliness. "Bring a little lavender in, if you got any. Pink if you don't" (4). Baby Suggs and color are always used together. Morrison always tries to bring in a little color where ever sethe was in contrast to Sethe who wanted a world without color. In this quote the color could be used to show happiness with Baby Suggs. "That means red but when you talk about velvet you got to say carmine" (35).
