Columbus Day was a day to celebrate the Italian American explorer who sailed to North America in 1492 and was erroneously tagged to have discovered America, where millions of indigenous communities dwelled before his exploration (Zerillo, 2023). These misdeeds instigated people to challenge the government to have a review of the holiday based on the perceived negative value of his legacy, especially to the Indigenous people of America (Zerillo, 2023) In addition, scholars and aboriginal communities believe that the Columbus era marked the Holocaust period in America, which can never be erased from history. The more reason they called for alternative holidays such as St. Patrick’s Day and Indigenous People’s Day to celebrate and honor the value, culture, and contribution of the Native Americans to the country (Zerillo, 2023). Today, many states in America have changed their public holiday to Indigenous People’s Day to offer reflection on societal injustices and how to redesign more acceptable ways of celebrating our differences and cultural diversity in the new world order called the United States of America.
